The most notable differences in our rule book:

  • Test readers are not allowed
  • A snaffle is allowed for any age horse.
  • A curb bit must be ridden in one hand.
  • Bitless bridles, including the bosal, sidepull, and halter, are allowed for any age horse. Excluded are any mechanical devices, the mechanical hackamore, the quick stop, and the Natural Horsemanship Rope Bitless Bridle.
  • Western attire is mandatory, but should be weather appropriate. Our judges appreciate a well turned out pair, but will not penalize you for wearing short sleeves in very hot weather, or a heavy coat when the temperatures are very cold.
  • A balanced, soft, and engaged horse will be highly rewarded. Differences of training history or philosophy are accepted. A dressage turn on the haunches is different from a western turn on the haunches. Both can be executed well, with balance and athletic excellence. We accept these differences and encourage you to train to your program, then present your horse for judging to us.

The Ranch Horse Program is the brain child of Julie Slater, Mike Marquez and Dr Mike Guerini. Each has a long history on the ranch and deep ties to the ranching community.

The rules incorporate traditional values and a concern for the welfare and longevity of our horses. Whether you are preparing your horse for Ranch Riding or Reining classes, or are developing him into a handy ranch horse, the progression laid out in the levels will be of great benefit in your training program.

We follow the rules of the USEF for Western Dressage, except for the differences laid out in the RHP Guidelines
